Almost anywhere you go that has a crafty kind of theme; there will likely be a quilt show. The purpose of this show is to display handmade quilts and machine quilts that people have made.
Making one is a very involved process, and can take a lot of time. If you are not familiar with quilting, then you may not be aware of how long it takes to make one.
When making one, first you have to choose what fabric and batting to use. What fabric to use is up to the quilter. The main thing to remember is that the fabric that you choose has to work well with the pattern that you choose. Then the fabric must be cut into whatever shape of quilt blocks the pattern requires.
Then the piecing of the quilt happens. Each smaller group of quilt blocks get sewn together to make one large block. Then these are sewn together to make the quilt top. Next the top is layered together with the batting and backing.
Then the edges have to be sewn up and then the real quilting can begin. The chosen quilt pattern gets embroidered into the fabric. That is where the real quilting skill comes in. Then after all these steps, it is ready for the quilt show.
A quilt show is held to show off the beautiful and elaborate designs and quilts that people have made. In many cases, these quilts are sold for fundraising, or even for charities. Most fairs and craft shows have a quilters section, because quilting is always a popular event with ladies everywhere.
Most people love to walk through a sea of quilts, admiring the beauty and fine work of the quilt artists. The art form of quilting has really changed a lot in recent years with higher levels of technology.
There are specific quilting machine tools that are used to make quilting easier than ever. There is also quilting pattern software that can help make different and unusual quilting patterns. New materials are also being put into quilts that never were before, such as metal threads, and different kinds of paint.
There are even colored pencils designed to "paint" one once it is finished. Recent years have seen a break from traditional quilting, so it might be possible to see a metallic, leopard print quilt hanging from the walls!
The main reason to have a quilt show is so that the quilters can show off all their pretty creations. If you are ever able to go to one, then it would be well worth it to see all the skilled handiwork. Looking at the handmade quilts is a real treat. It is pretty amazing to see what some people can do with some scraps of fabric.
