Many aspects have been covered in this article so that you can benefit from an extended research.

Websters Dictionary was first created by Noah Webster in 1806. Since that time not only has his dictionary expanded, but Webster has become a generic name for many English language dictionaries.

Websters dictionary was the work of Noah Webster who was born October 16, 1758 in Hartford Connecticut. His family had lived there since colonial times. His dad farmed. He was a descendant of Connecticut Governor John Webster. Noah's mother could trace her roots back to the governor of Plymouth colony.

At the age of 16 Noah began studies at Yale. At this time America was fighting against Britian for freedom. Noah fought in the war.

By the time he was 20 Noah wanted to be a lawyer. To make a living he taught. He soon grew tired of the legal profession. He went back to being a teacher. A school he founded ended up going out of business.

He married a socially upward woman in 1789. Despite being welcome by the upper class, he wasn't wealthy. He started a newspaper in New York with some money Alexander Hamilton loaned him. He began to publish. This was the real start for Websters dictionary. He published many textbooks while writing newspaper articles at an incredible rate. He served in the Connecticut House of Representatives after moving back there in 1798.

He was astounded at the poor conditions faced by children in schools. There were too many students in each classroom. Teachers didn't know very much about teaching. There weren't many supplies. Webster wanted American kids to learn from books written in American English. So he wrote a three volume set a speller, a grammar book, and a reader. His goal was to rescue American English from what he called the pedantry of English grammar and pronunciation. He held that the language should come from the people rather than being dictated to them.

This thinking eventually led to Websters dictionary. Over time that original work was revised. After Webster's death the Merriam brothers bought the rights to his works and name. Most English language dictionaries are called Webster.

Now you know the history of Websters dictionary. In reading the article about this subject I hope you have expanded your knowledge.

If you observe a really happy man you will find him building a boat, writing a symphony, educating his son, growing double dahlias in his garden, or looking for dinosaur eggs in the Gobi desert. He will not be searching for happiness as if it were a collar button that has rolled under the radiator. He will not be striving for it as a goal in itself. He will have become aware that he is happy in the course of living life twenty-four crowded hours of the day. ~W. Beran Wolfe
