Your engagement ring is special to you for many reasons, and you of course want to do whatever you can to take care of it to keep it looking its best both before and after the wedding, and for generations to come.

In general, you should always make sure to take off your ring before participating in sports or other vigorous activities, and be sure to keep your ring in the same safe place everyday.

You should also remove your ring before housecleaning or yard work that involves harsh chemicals and excessive dirt.

Clean your ring at least once a week, and be sure to have it inspected twice a year to make sure that the setting is still secure. You should also consider having it appraised every few years in case of loss, and insure it as well, against theft, loss, accidental damage.

You should also never take your ring off near sinks or bathtubs, while applying heavy makeup, lotions or creams, while swimming in open water, or in pools. And as beautiful as your ring is, you should avoid excessively touching it, since the oils in your hands can cloud the sparkle of the gems.

The best way to clean your engagement ring is to use a solution of water and a mild detergent. There are many store bought solutions that are also good for soaking diamonds and brightening them, but these should never be used with fracture filled diamonds.

You may also want to have your ring professionally cleaned, either ultrasonically or with steam. Diamonds that are extremely dirty can also be boiled in sulfuric acid, although this is really a last resort. Make sure to let the jeweler know if your engagement ring has serious flaws, since cleaning it the wrong way can accent these flaws.

Store your ring in a box lined with soft fabric, but keep in mind that a jewelry box is the first place that a burglar will look, so keep seldom worn jewelry in a safe deposit box, and your engagement ring in a soft lined box, somewhere other than a jewelry box.

Regardless of the type of engagement ring you have, your jeweler will know the best way to care for it, and should be consulted before you attempt to clean the ring yourself. Following these tips will help to keep your ring as brilliant and shiny as it was the day that you first put it on.
