Most of us work sitting in front of a computer or screen nowadays - it's the default work position for the bulk of human beings in the 21st Century. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with that; even celebrities like the late Peter Ustinov claimed to have wanted to volunteer for the Tank Corps during the Second World War so they could go into battle sitting down!

However, remaining seated for long periods of time is not what the human body was built for. If you want to avoid aggravating existing problems or creating new ones, then some thought should be given to using and adjusting the correct type of office chair.

Ergonomically designed office or task seating need not be unattractive either, and aesthetic design is just as important a consideration as form and function. There are some general rules that should be followed for any office chair.

The height should be adjusted so that your forearms are parallel to or slightly sloping down towards the keyboard. Your shoulders should feel relaxed and your knees should be slightly lower than your hips. Your feet should be in contact with the floor and the small of the back should be supported to help preserve the natural curve of the spine.

Many manufacturers' ergonomic products incorporate all these features. The Embody chair from Herman Miller for example has been designed specifically for use by computer workers. It lets your body move and keeps you well supported. It incorporates rotation points within the seat and back, and the base of the back remains fixed relative to the seat; this encourages the body to move naturally into the most positive seated postures. Whether you lean forward or recline, your lower back support remains constant.

No adjustments are needed and users of all sizes can easily assume and maintain a reclined position.
Using ergonomic form and function as the guidelines for producing office seating often results in a product that is visually stunning and elegant too. Aeron is another Herman Miller chair that adapts naturally and adjusts precisely to fit people of all sizes and is suitable for computer work, general office work, and casual or formal meetings. It has been declared one of the 'Designs of the Decade' by Business Week magazine. So you can sit comfortably and stylishly too!
