How many times have you been to an airport and found yourself grumbling with dissatisfaction? Perhaps you found yourself confused where to go, swamped by the crowds, the staff were inefficient or the facilities poor. If you could build the perfect airport from scratch maybe you would borrow some ideas from different airports across the world or just invent something completely new.
-Check In
A super-fast flowing self service system would be amazing. Rather than everybody having to queue for two desks and have an airline assistant manually check your luggage and papers, if passengers could pass themselves through one of multiple gates scanning documents etc. barely having to pause, checking in would be a breeze and barely a cause for consideration upon arrival.
-Space
There should be loads of space at points where travelers congregate and where they are channeled through to different areas. Accommodating peak periods with plenty of space to prevent the airport from feeling cramped creates a more relaxed atmosphere.
-Navigation
The perfect building layout would involve an obvious directional progression through procedural stages. So when you arrive you are automatically funneled through each process needed before you can board your flight. There should be limited options for direction until you have passed through the last stage and can choose to wait at the gate or visit shops or cafes etc. Big sign posts should be displayed well above head height with no obstruction.
-Shops
A brilliant array of top stores would, of course, be available at the perfect airport. The equivalent of Bluewater perhaps but you would need a quick route to the gates: when your wife has gotten lost in all the glorious shoes.
-Cafes
A good choice of Cafes located on a high floor with glass walls providing great views over the airport runway. Isolated from the general noise of the airport so you can relax in quiet enjoying the panoramic views.
-Hotels
The airport would have a quality hotel adjacent to the terminal- much like the Hilton at Gatwick's South terminal. People can rest after their car journey and in the morning they are only a minute walk away from check-in. A covered walkway would be ideal and luggage trolleys available for extra convenience.
-Entertainment
For the gents, there should be a games arcade- a perfect escape from escorting the lady through clothes shops while you wait.
-Lounges
A few great lounges available to everyone with different decor/themes. A quiet atmosphere like the cafes but with corners housing televisions, play areas for the kids and a large bar.
-Security
A difficult one because a smooth procedure relies on every passenger knowing the limitations before reaching the check point. Giant message boards displaying the do's and don'ts of security checks might help so people can prepare before clogging the system up when forced to open bags/remove items. One swift operation would be employed at the check point- one scan for you and your hand luggage and a separate secondary scan area for people needing to remove items so the main channel of people continues to flow.
-Baggage Claim
Of course, there would be no wait for your baggage at the perfect airport. As soon as you have passed through customs and reached baggage claim- the conveyor belt will already be conveying your luggage.
-Aesthetics
The perfect airport would be a beautiful work of architectural genius. From the outside, it should be grand and modern making you feel excited about the start of your holiday. The inside should be eye-catching and classy- forcing you to look around and appreciate the sleek aesthetics. When you return to your country from holiday, the airport should fill you with a sense of national pride through it's superior design.
-Parking
Parking should be as close to the airport as possible enabling you to walk undercover just a short distance to the terminal. Trolleys for your luggage should be located frequently throughout the car park. Any parking spaces found too far from the terminal to walk should be near a large bus shelter -enough to shelter plenty of people while they wait for the transfer bus, which runs no more than 10 minutes apart.
