Christmas is almost upon us and many people are hitting the shops to buy their festive presents. The build up to the special day can be as fun as the day itself, so long as you don't exhaust the event by getting excited months in advance. If you do drag Christmas out for too long, the month of December is bound to be far less exhilarating than it might be for those who only begin to feel festive from Advent onwards.

Personally, I think once December hits, there is every reason to begin the build up to Christmas. You can start your Advent Calendars and see that the festive day is coming. There are also many other things you can do to get in the festive spirit and enjoy the magic of the Christmas period.

A lot of towns and cities turn on their Christmas lights around the start of December. It can be a fun night out venturing down to watch the lights being switched on and you may even see a celebrity who has been asked to do the honour. Gather family and friends and make a night out of it. See if you can find any stalls selling mince pies and mulled wine and afterwards you could even head down the pub.

Around this time of year there are usually lots of Pantomimes on. If you have children this can be a great way to treat them before Christmas. You could even book theatre tickets and enjoy a London stage show. Money permitting you could add a meal onto your theatre trip or a special hotel stay. This is a sure way of enjoying yourself in the run up to December 25th.

Local Churches are sure to hold Carol services, where you can sing your way into Christmas. Carols by candle light are especially wonderful if you can find one to go to. The concert in Canterbury Cathedral is by candle light and it is quite spectacular.

If you do not feel like going out very much over the festive period there are still lots of things you can do to keep the festive spirit alive. If the weather is just too cold, grab a duvet and put on your favourite Christmas movie. If you are feeling creative you could try making your own mince pies, cheese straws or even a Christmas pudding.

There are plenty of things to do this December and hopefully Christmas will be as enjoyable as possible. Eat, drink, be merry, write cards, wrap presents and have fun.
